Canada has announced significant changes to its immigration system, effective Spring 2025 and December 23, 2024, respectively.
LMIA Points Cut: Starting in the spring of 2025, Express Entry candidates will no longer receive additional points for having a job offer supported by a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). This change aims to reduce fraud and ensure a fair and transparent immigration process.
End of Flagpoling: Effective December 23, 2024, individuals will no longer be able to obtain or renew work and study permits through “flagpoling,” a practice involving briefly leaving and re-entering Canada. This decision is intended to streamline border operations and enhance border security.
Impact on Applicants: These changes will impact both Express Entry candidates and those seeking work or study permits. Candidates will need to rely on other factors, such as language proficiency and education, to increase their chances of receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA). Temporary residents will need to submit their work or study permit applications directly to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) instead of at the border.
Canada’s Commitment to Immigration: Despite these changes, Canada remains committed to welcoming newcomers and supporting its economic growth. By implementing these measures, the government aims to maintain a fair, efficient, and secure immigration system.
